The idea of this very basic activity is to identify the basic principles of a particle accelerator, as found on a common CRT TV set.
Students are introduced to the concept and then are asked to identify the basic parts as well as answer simple questions like : “How are the electrons projected ? “ How are they bend ? Why is there vacuum in the tube ? What is the purpose of the magnets ? etc. Then they are asked to identify the same principles as found in the LHC, as seen in the demo pictures below and then complete the worksheet. This activity is an important prerequisite for future discussions about important aspects of the LHC, like how are particles accelerated, what keeps them on their path, how they bend, how they remain focused etc.
